Matrix Pack spout pouches for liquid products

A spout pouch marries the lightness of flexible packaging with the convenience of a bottle and cap. It lets you pour, dose and reclose a product without a single spill. Here is how it is built, which products it suits and what to keep in mind during filling.

In short

A spout pouch is a stand-up doypack with a built-in spout and a screw cap. It suits liquid and paste-like products: juices, purees, sauces, detergents, motor oil and baby food. The main advantages are easy dosing, reclosing and weight savings over a bottle. Minimum order from 5,000 pcs.

What a spout pouch is

A spout pouch is a flexible doypack with a plastic spout and screw cap welded into the seal. A flat bottom lets it stand on the shelf, and the spout makes the product easy to pour or squeeze out. In essence it is a hybrid: the barrier properties and lightness of a pouch married to the controlled delivery of a bottle.

On top of that, the format weighs less than rigid containers and travels in a smaller volume, and once empty the pouch takes up next to no space in the bin.

Spout and cap types and positions

Spouts differ in diameter, cap type and mounting position. What you settle on comes down to how viscous the product is and how it will be consumed.

Spout diameterNarrower for liquid products (juices, water), wider for thick ones (purees, sauces)
Cap typeClassic screw cap, sports cap, tamper-evident cap with first-opening control
Corner positionSpout in the top corner, convenient to pour into a glass
Top-center positionSpout at the center of the top seal, typical for baby puree, easy to suck

Baby food usually calls for a central spout and a tamper-evident cap. Juices and liquid sauces, on the other hand, pour more easily from a corner spout.

Which products a spout pouch suits

A spout pouch handles a surprisingly wide range of liquid and paste-like products:

  • Drinks and juices: smoothies, juices, water, energy drinks, ready cocktails.
  • Purees: fruit and vegetable purees, including baby food.
  • Sauces and pastes: ketchup, mayonnaise, tomato paste, liquid honey.
  • Detergents: liquid soap, gels, laundry products (as refill format).
  • Motor oil: engine oils and technical fluids in compact packaging.
  • Baby food: puree with a spout, convenient for self-feeding.

Advantages of a spout pouch

  • Precise dosing. The spout gives a controlled flow, easy to measure the needed amount.
  • Reclosing. The screw cap lets you close the pouch and use the product in portions.
  • No spill. The product pours neatly without splashing.
  • Light and compact. Lower weight than a bottle, savings on logistics and shelf space.
  • Refill format. Ideal as a refill for a reusable dispenser.
  • Full-color printing. The whole pouch surface works for the brand.

Filling considerations

So what should you think through in advance? To keep a spout pouch running smoothly on the line, bear a few points in mind:

  1. Product viscosity. Determines the spout diameter and the filling method (through the neck or through the open top before sealing).
  2. Filling method. Filling can go through the spout itself or into the pouch before the spout is welded on.
  3. Sterility. Juices and baby food need suitable film and hygienic filling.
  4. Barrier. Long storage requires a barrier layer (aluminum or metallization) against oxygen and light.
  5. Volume and stability. The flat bottom must hold a filled pouch stably on the shelf.

We match the spout type, film and pouch size to your product and your filling line.
